Eddie O’Kane demonstrates a continuing interest in a sense of place and the intemporal quality of that place in his practice over the past thirty years. His main preoccupation is the timeless form of human intervention in nature. He conveys the permanence of the landscape and the transience of light. Increasingly concerns have centered on the universality of painterly themes such as ‘the path’ and ‘the gate’ and ‘the city’. The importance of travel to the artist’s inspiration is emphasised through his work based on visits to England, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Germany and areas in rural Ireland. His work makes reference to the influence of a number of artists including; Johannes Vermeer, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Andrew Wyeth, Edward Hopper and Karl Larssen. O’Kane studied Fine Art/Painting at the College of Art in Belfast. He also completed postgraduate study in Art and Design at University of Ulster. In 2008 he won first prize for painting at the Oireachtas art exhibition in Cork, Ireland. O’Kane has exhibited extensively, with venues including the McClelland Gallery and Queens University, Belfast, the Orchard Gallery, Iontas, Sligo Art Gallery and the United States Embassy in Dublin. He has exhibited a number of times in the Oireachtas, and Royal Ulster Academy exhibitions. His work is featured in many private and public collections including the Office of Public Works, Donegal County Council, Hillsborough Castle the Derek Hill and Brian Friel Collections.
